The good folks at MonsterLibrarian.com have posted the Horror Survival List which was developed on the Shocklines forum by various authors.
The list contains 93 items. Seriously, these are not suggestions. Read them. Learn them. Live them.
My favorite?
Number 23: Don’t play with it. Whatever it is, however interesting you find it, just don’t play with it. You have no idea where it’s been or what it’ll do.
